The scope of the health commission on a national level is to be a resource to parents, teachers, and students on health matters.
Our main role is to oversee Red Ribbon Week, arrange for volunteers to help with the vision screening, and advise the PTA board on any new developments of concern in the area of children's health.
Some areas of concentration this year include:
- Swine Flu
- Teaching parents and teachers how to identify symptoms
- Teaching students prevention steps, including washing or sanitizing hands after restroom use, before eating, after recess, etc.
- Teaching students to stay healthy and keep a strong immune system by eating right, practicing proper hygiene, and getting adequate sleep.
- Red Ribbon week / Healthy Choices Week (in October)
- This year, we would like to use Red Ribbon Week to focus on the benefits of eating healthy foods, exercise and movement, and the dangers of drug use.
* * * Volunteer help is needed! Please contact the Health Commissioner for details * * *
- Healthy Rewards
- We will continue to encourage teachers and parents to use NON-FOOD rewards in the classroom and at home. Alternative ideas include:
- Extra recess time, extra story/reading time
- Stickers, pencils, glow sticks, small games, bubbles, etc
- Points towards a special lunch with the teacher or Mr. Turner
* * * Donations for non-food rewards are greatly appreciated! * * *
Brain Gym
- A technique of movements that help stimulate integration of the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Clients, teachers, and students have been reporting for over 20 years on the effectiveness of these simple activities. Even though it is not clear yet "why" these movements work so well, they often bring about dramatic improvements in areas such as:
- Concentration and Focus
- Memory
- Academics: reading, writing, math, test taking
- Physical coordination
- Relationships
- Self-responsibility
- Organization skills
- Attitude
Fantastic Friday Activities
- To reduce sedentary activity at recess, we will be helping students incorporate fun and effective movement activities during recess on Fridays.
Health Articles
- We will include monthly articles in the newsletter to address health issues relevant to our children's health.
Health Training
- We will continue to go to trainings and report back any significant developments to the parents and teachers and make suggestions for improvement where and when necessary.
If you have ideas that would help our students learn more healthy habits, or if you would like to talk to us regarding anything about the Health Commission,
please feel free to contact any of the Health Commissioners.
